If Jeyes thought sales of their famous disinfectent would never surpass levels reached during World War I when it was used to clean out trenches, they hadn’t the imagination to foresee the demand resulting from this fourth-rate Government’s lunatic bins policy. With so many suffering from fortnightly collections and a consequential rise in maggot infestations, Jeyes’ sales have soared by 82 per cent over the last year.
Now any normal polician would surely be content to rest on his laurels for a while, taking pleasure from the scenes of decay and destruction he has caused, but not our Gordon.
Despite the increased risk of salmonella, E-coli and hookworm, the Government has sent something called a “Flycapture Enforcement training package” to councils which includes a template for threatening local residents who disobey the recycling rules. The template states: ”Any person who fails without reasonable cause to comply with any of the above requirements shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £1,000.”
And what are the ‘above requirements’? Heinous outrages such as failing to close the lid of the bin, putting the bin in the wrong place or (especially to please the Norwich stasi) putting rubbish in the wrong bin all attract the £1000 binstupidity tax.
But not even that is enough to quell this most awful of crimes. Apparently the 2003 Anti-Social Behaviour Act and the 2005 Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act also give council snoopers the power to intrude into our homes to investigate environmental offences and, should they be obstructed in any way, then a fine of £5000 can be levied.
Speaking about the whole sorry mess, Eric Pickles, the relentlessly sensible opposition local government spokesman said: “While the bin bullies target families, professional criminals make a racket out of dumping and get away scot-free. It’s time to call off this ‘binquisition’, and protect the rights of local citizens from the intrusive, hectoring, snooping state.”
