At a time when defending the chaps in blue becomes increasingly difficult due to Labour’s insistence on politically correct and socially aware policing (see Police fall guys below), the actions of an individual policeman can make it just that bit harder.
Step forward the unidentified constable in Wiltshire who has ordered a motorist to remove the flag of St George from his car because it could be “offensive to immigrants”.
The motorist was stopped by a routine patrol and after having had his tax and insurance checked to the constable’s satisfaction was ordered to remove the flag which was lying across the parcel shelf in the back of the car. According to the motorist:
“He saw the flag and said it was racist towards immigrants and if I refused to take it down I would get a £30 fine. I laughed because I thought he was joking, but then I realised he was serious so I had to take it down straight away.”
The only saving grace in this very sorry tale is the reaction of the local police who seem to want to distance themselves from their over zealous politically correct colleague as fast as possible. PC Dave Cooper, of Chippenham Road Policing Unit, said he had never come across an officer asking someone to remove an England flag from their car because it could be racist and that the constable involved could have come from anywhere in the County. “Not us guv, never seen him before, honest.”
